Kayes Named First Team Academic All-District

AKRON, Ohio - Senior Carrie Kayes has been named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District women's track & field/cross country teams for the second consecutive season. Earning second team honors in 2009, Kayes received first team nods as part of the District IV squad.
A 2010 NCAA Indoor All-American, placing fourth at the NCAA Championships, Kayes qualified first in the pole vault at the NCAA East and will compete in the finals on Friday, June 11 at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Setting a school, Mid-American Conference and state of Ohio record with an indoor vault of 14-3.25, Kayes was also the 2010 MAC Indoor Champion and MAC Outdoor runner-up. During the indoor season, Kayes won the pole vault five times, clearing at least 13-3 each time and clearing the NCAA automatic qualifying height twice. This outdoor season, Kayes posted a vault of 13-11.25, which ranks second in the NCAA East Region.
Also stellar in the classroom hailing from nearby Green, Ohio Kayes holds a 3.65 grade point average while majoring in exercise science.
Along with Kayes four other Zips will represent the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships set for June 9-12. Valerie Wert is the only Zip who qualified for two events and is set to compete in the hammer and discus. Phil Ferguson qualified for the 200m and decathletes Daniel Kinsey and Bjorn Johansson round out the Zips competing for Akron.
