Volleyball Slated To Host Buffalo In MAC Tournament

AKRON, Ohio - The seventh seeded University of Akron volleyball team will host the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament Tuesday welcoming the tenth seeded Buffalo Bulls to James A. Rhodes Arena.

TEAM NOTES
• The Zips ended the regular season with a second place finish in the east division. In the pre-season poll Akron was picked to finish sixth and placed fourth in the division at the conclusion of last season's play.
• Posting a 14-18 overall record in 2009 and 5-11 conference record the last two seasons, Akron's 15 wins this season and seven conference victories are the most during the tenure of third year head coach and MAC Coach of the Year candidate Ron Arenz. The conference mark is also the most any Zips team has posted since the 2003 season.
• The last time Akron advanced past the first round was in 2003 when UA beat Northern Illinois in five sets before falling to Marshall in a straight sweep.
• The Zips and Bulls split during the regular season with each team winning on the opponent's respective floor. Akron swept UB on Oct. 7 while Buffalo won in five sets last Thursday (Nov. 11).
• If Akron advances the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals are at the SeaGate Convention Centre in Toledo, Ohio beginning on Friday, Nov. 19. The conference's tournament champion earns an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
• Other MAC first round match ups include No. 5 Eastern Michigan hosting No. 12 Bowling Green, No. 8 Toledo hosting No. 9 Kent State and No. 6 Central Michigan hosting No. 11 Miami. Regular season champion and No. 1 seeded Ball State, East Division winner Ohio, and Western Michigan and Northern Illinois all earned a bye in the first round.
PLAYER NOTES
• Solid throughout the season on both sides of the ball, junior Courtney Jarvis has been the team leader in kills all year with 301 (2.98 K/S) and is second on the team in digs with 296 (2.93 D/S).
• Junior middle blocker Tina Dimitrijevs has been solid at the net for the Zips and led the attack against Buffalo posting seven block assists to go along with one solo. Dimitrijevs also led UA in kills grabbing 15 kills.
• Defensively, sophomore Chelsea Harvey has been the leader for UA ranking in the top five in the Mid-American Conference all season. Playing in every set this season, Harvey averages 4.28 digs per set.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• The Zips have been honored with the MAC East Division Player of Week five times. Jarvis received the offensive nod twice in a row while Harvey has been given the division's defensive honor three times.
