Buffalo, N.Y. - The University of Akron volleyball downed Buffalo in three sets Thursday evening to win the Zips tenth straight and move to 13-4 on the year and 5-0 in conference play. The Zips remain the only undefeated team in the league.
Freshman Alex Cocklin was the star for UA pounding down a career-high 15 kills. Redshirt freshman Alex Wiederholt followed with eight kills also adding three block assists.
Sophomore Chelsea Harvey and junior Courtney Jarvis manned the backcourt posting a combined 29 digs. Senior Jackie Goleman also contributed defensively registering four block assists and one solo block.
In the first set, Buffalo would start out on top grabbing a 12-6 lead. However, a UB service error would put the ball back in the hands of the Zips and spur four consecutive kills to put UA within one (11-12). Another UB error would tie it up at 12. Back and forth Buffalo would pull ahead for a 18-14 lead but a determined Zips squad would tie the contest at 22. A Jarvis service ace put UA up 23-22 and two follow up Buffalo attack errors gave UA a one set lead.
Akron would maintain a solid lead in the second set grabbing the biggest match advantage at the 22-16 mark for the eventual 25-17 win.
The third set started out much like the first. UB went up 13-8, however, a 7-2 Zips run including three Cocklin kills, tied it up at 15-15 with Akron pulling away for the 24-19 lead. UB would go on a 4-0 run but to no avail as a kill from Cocklin would put the Bulls away by a score of 25-23.
Akron will continue MAC action on Saturday returning home to face Toledo for a 7:00 p.m. match.
