UA's Korb Named to TDS National Team of the Week

University of Akron men's soccer junior Chris Korb has been
named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week,
the publication announced Monday.
Korb, a defender from Gates Mills, Ohio, helped anchor a Zips'
backline that posted a pair of 1-0 victories on opening weekend
against SMU and No. 14 Tulsa. Doing so was no small feat as the
Mustangs were ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation in 2008 while
the Golden Hurricane boasted the nation's 22nd-ranked offensive
unit.
In 180 minutes, UA's defense limited SMU and Tulsa to 10 combined
shots, including just four on goal as the Zips improved to 2-0-0 on
the young campaign. Joining Korb on Akron's backline were sophomore
Kofi
Sarkodie and true freshmen Chad Barson and Zarek
Valentin. Fellow true freshman goalkeeper David
Meves went the distance in both games, posting four saves on
the weekend.
After transfering from Xavier, Korb started all 23 games for the
nation's No. 1-ranked defense in 2008. Additionally, the physical
defender recorded one of the biggest goals of the season by finding
the net in the 86th minute against Hartwick in the Mid-American
Conference Tournament semifinals to force overtime in a game that
UA advanced, 3-0, on penalty kicks.

Zips Retain TDS Top Ranking, Move Up in Soccer America
Poll
Akron remained at the top of Top Drawer Soccer's national rankings while
moving up one slot to No. 1 in the Soccer America poll
Monday. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll,
which ranked the Zips No. 3 during the preseason, will be released
Tuesday.
UA will look to continue its winning ways when it travels to the
adidas Bearcat Classic on the campus of the University of
Cincinnati. Akron will face off against High Point Friday at 5 p.m.
before meeting the host Bearcats Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
