Men's Golf Adds One to 2009-10 Class
July 27 | Men's Golf
- After initially completing the incoming class in May, head
coach Nick Goetze has added
standout Kentucky native Peter Meeks to the
2009-10 squad.
"I'm very excited that we were able to sign Peter for the 2009-10
season and I know he will be a tremendous asset to our golf
program," said Goetze. "He has excellent swing mechanics,
confidence with his wedges and putter and a great record in high
level competition. Peter is a very polished player with a resilient
attitude and he is exactly the type of player that will help our
team gain the national success we've been working toward."
After spending his freshman and sophomore year at the world
renowned IMG David Leadbetter Golf Academy, Meeks finished out his
high school career at Marshall County (Ky.) High School where he
helped lead the Marshals to a first place finish at the 2007
Kentucky High School Athletic Association Championship,
individually placing second. In 2008, Meeks led his team to a
runner-up finish, placing fourth individually.
Currently ranked the second best player in Kentucky, and 91st
nationally, Meeks has posted an outstanding summer season posting a
fifth place finish at the PGA Junior Series (May 26-28) carding a
217 (70-73-74). At the 92nd Western Junior Championship (June
15-19), Meeks finished 24th of 147 finishing with a 295 mark over
four rounds (74-73-72-76). Also participating in the American
Junior Golf Association Mizuno Junior tournament (April 9-12) and
the AJGA Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic (June 1-4),
Meeks placed 43rd and 50th respectively.
Meeks will join Georgia native Cameron Simmons and junior
transfer Lucas Murray for the fall
season.
A two-time region winner in 2007 and 2008, Simmons led his Harrison
High School squad to three seasons of 33 or more wins. In
tournament play, Simmons finished in the top-10 of five events. As
a junior, he finished T-10th at the Future Masters event, T-5 at
the Georgia Junior and T-10 at the state championship. On the
national level, Simmons has been ranked as high as #160 on the
National Junior Golf Scoreboard.
A four-year letterwinner at local Canton South high school, Murray
was a two-time NCAA Division III Ping All-American at Mount Union
and averaged 72.7 on the links as a sophomore posting 11 top-five
finishes in 13 events. Grabbing a 38th place finish at the 2009
NCAA Championships, Murray's best regular-season finish came at the
Malone Fall Classic where he tallied a 71-64 carding a 9-under.
The Zips will begin their fall season Sept. 13-14 at the Maryland
Intercollegiate.
