AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron head volleyball coach Ron Arenz recently announced the signing of defensive specialist Chelsea Harvey and setter Morgan Kuhn to the 2009 recruiting class. Harvey and Kuhn will join fall signees Ari Mewhorter and Paiton Twitty for the upcoming season.
Harvey, a local prospect from nearby Stow, Ohio, was a two-time
team captain and MVP at Stow High School averaging 242 kills and
177.5 digs a season. A two-time Akron Beacon Journal Player to
Watch, Harvey earned a spot on the North Eastern Ohio Conference
first team and all-district first team as a junior and senior. In
2009, she led her team to a 17-7 record where they finished the
year as NEOC runner-ups, district champions and a regional
semi-finalist. The current Ohio High School Athletic Association
(OHSAA) record holder for most kills in a match (26), Harvey was a
member of the Renaissance Cleveland club team.
"As a local player, we've watched Chelsea over the past year
really develop into a well rounded player," said Arenz. "She's very
competitive and has a fantastic volleyball IQ. Along with her
ability to attack, we will rely on her backrow skills and drive to
make plays."
Kuhn, hailing from Dodgeland High School in Juneau, Wisc. comes
to Akron as an outstanding individual both on and off the court. A
four-time first team All-Trailways Conference and MVP and a
two-time team captain, Kuhn accumulated 407 kills, 300 digs, 200
assists and 68 blocks as a senior helping her team claim the
conference and regional championship posting a 28-5 record. Named
the 2009 conference Player of the Year and a two-time AVCA High
School Player of the Week, Kuhn also earned all-state honorable
mention. In the classroom, Kuhn has received the Women's Sports
Advocate of Wisconsin Award of Excellence and was a Dodgeland
Scholar Athlete, Army Reserve Scholar Athlete and United States
Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete.
"Morgan is a multi-sport athlete that comes to our program from an area of the country where the competition levels are great," said Arenz. "As a steady competitor, her match and training experience will help her easily make the transition to the college game as a setter."
Currently in the midst of their spring schedule, the Zips will open the 2009 regular season in Terre Haute, Ind. at the Best Western Sycamore Classic (Aug 28-29).
