Men's Soccer Climbs National Polls After Big Weekend

AKRON, Ohio Coming off its big
season-opening weekend in Bloomington, Ind., the University of
Akron men's soccer team jumped seven slots to No. 5 in the latest
NSCAA/adidas national poll, released Tuesday.
It is UA's highest designation since owning the top spot in the
country for four weeks during the 2005 campaign.
The Zips (1-0-1) won the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic after
defeating Notre Dame, which fell from third to eighth in the poll,
3-0, before earning a 0-0 double overtime tie against host Indiana,
which moved up one spot to sixth.
Four UA players were named to the tournament team, including
Offensive MVP and current Mid-American Conference Player of the
Week Steve Zakuani. Joining Zakuani were freshman Kofi
Sarkodie, who recorded the first Akron goal of the season,
sophomore Anthony Ampaipitakwong, who scored a goal and
assisted another against the Fighting Irish, and junior Ben
Zemanski.
The Zips' success last weekend was also reflected in a number of
other national polls. Akron was ranked No. 7 by both Top Drawer
Soccer and Soccer America, while the College
Soccer News listed UA at No.13.
Akron fans will have to opportunity to see the Zips in action this
weekend at the University of Akron Tournament. UA will host
West Virginia Friday night at 7:30 p.m. (EST) at Lee Jackson Field.
Cincinnati will face Wisconsin-Green Bay in the first game of the
day, starting at 5 p.m.
