Tennis Defeated 6-1 By Eastern Michigan
April 18 | Women's Tennis
AKRON, Ohio The University of Akron lost
6-1 to Eastern Michigan in an outdoor Mid-American Conference
women's tennis match on Friday at Springside Racquet and Fitness Club.
Akron's lone score of the afternoon came on the doubles court,
where it won the point in dramatic fashion. The Zips' duo of Kerry
Langworthy and Jeremie Benjamin scored an 8-4 win at No.
3, but the UA team of Tanyaradzwa Gombera and Carolina
Castro Cota gave up No. 1, 8-4. That meant the winner of the
No. 2 flight would claim the early one-point match lead, and the
Akron pair of Lindsey Berry and Alyssa
Carlson trailed at that spot 5-4 to Sandra Wikstrom and
Alkesandra Stankovic. Berry and Carlson rallied to make it 7-all
and then earned the point for UA, with a 9-7 victory.
Akron's momentum would stop there, however, as it handed over all
six singles flights in straight sets. Eastern Michigan (8-12, 4-3)
did not allow UA to score more than three points in any set.
Langworthy and Benjamin's doubles win improved them to 4-3
versus MAC opponents in pairs play this season. Those four
victories tie them for most in league play in a single season in
program history.
The Zips (5-13, 0-7 MAC) close the regular season on Saturday by
playing host to Toledo, and UA seniors Laura
Hemlepp and Amy Sherlock will be honored in a special
pre-match ceremony. The MAC tournament runs April 24-27 in Buffalo,
N.Y., and will be hosted by
University at Buffalo.
Saturday's contest is scheduled
to be played at Springside Racquet and Fitness Club (215 Springside Drive in Akron directions), but in the event of inclement weather it will be played
indoors at LaTuchie Tennis Center in nearby Stow (directions). The Akron area
forecast for Saturday calls for scattered showers and thunderstorms
and temperatures around 70 degrees.
