Volleyball Falls in Three to Miami RedHawks
November 15 | Women's Volleyball
Facing a tough Miami defense The University of Akron
volleyball team fell in three sets (15-25, 21-25, 18-25) to the
RedHawks Friday night at Millett Hall.
Held to a .113 attack percentage Miami forced 21 attack errors and
put up nine blocks on the night.
Despite being held to a -.062 attack percentage in the first set,
the Zips hung close with the RedHawks in the opening portion of the
frame but it was dominant kills by MU and Akron attack errors that
gave Miami the advantage they needed to pull ahead by seven, 17-10,
as they grabbed the 25-15 win.
In the second frame, it was the Zips who held the higher hitting
percentage posting a .161 to the RedHawks .128 but it was MU that
put up the early lead. Up 7-1, UA went on a 5-0 run thanks to Miami
errors and strong kills from sophomore Caitlin
O'Patchen (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and junior Brionna
Patterson (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) to bring the score within
one, 7-6, but two kills by MU's Megan Griffin would cushion the
RedHawks lead. Down 22-15, the resilient Zips went on a 4-0 run but
it wasn't enough as Miami won the set 25-21.
In the final set of the night, Akron hit a .235 but a dominating
.459 from the RedHawks pushed MU to a 25-18 win.
Junior Liz Martin (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) led the Zips
offensively putting up eight kills, followed by Patterson with
seven and six from freshman Tina
Dimitrijevs (Broadview Heights, Ohio/North Royalton).
Senior Jennifer Stewart (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood)
led UA in digs with 15 while junior Kara
Smith (Secor, Ill./El Paso-Gridley) posted 26 assists.
Akron will wrap up the regular season tomorrow taking on the
Bowling Green Falcons at 3:00 p.m. Live stats will be available here.
