Volleyball Grabs First Conference Win at Buffalo
October 04 | Women's Volleyball
Buffalo, N.Y.-The University of Akron
volleyball team captured its first win Friday night as the Zips
held the Buffalo Bulls to a .093 hitting percentage taking home
their first conference victory in three straight sets at the Alumni
Arena.
Akron was led offensively by junior Brionna
Patterson (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) who posted a team high 12
kills on the evening. Fellow Junior Liz
Martin (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) was second for UA posting eight
kills also adding a team high 12 digs.
Junior all-league candidate Kara
Smith (Secor, Ill./El Paso-Gridley) led Akron in assists
posting 30, while adding eight digs, two kills and a service
ace.
In the first set the Zips took the early lead after sophomore Jess
Antosz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area) started the night off with a
kill. Akron would remain in control the majority of the set until
the Bulls would threaten tying it at 21, however, a kill by Martin
and a UB attack error would give the Zips the two-point lead. After
a Buffalo timeout, UB's Kristin Bignell would post a kill but an
attack by sophomore Jackie Goleman ( De Soto, Kan./De Soto) and
another UB error would give the Zips the 25-22 set win.
Buffalo would take the early lead in set two as the Zips started
off with two errors. They would rebound tying the game at 2-2 but
Akron mistakes would put the Bulls up twice by four with scores of
7-3 and 11-7. An Akron timeout would give UA the push they needed
and they came out of the break forcing a service error, attack
error and two kills from Patterson to tie the set at 11-11. The
Zips would lead the rest of the way as they secured the set with a
25-23 win.
Set three would be much of the same action as Akron took the early
lead with Buffalo staying close by, however, leading 17-10, the
largest lead of the night, UA took the frame, 25-19, while holding
UB to a .000 hitting percentage.
Antosz led UA in blocks posing three assists and one solo.
The Zips return home tomorrow to play Toledo in their first home
match of the season. The contest begins at 7:00 p.m. with live
