Turocy Named MAC East Pitcher of the Week
April 02 | Baseball
Zips' sophomore Frank Turocy was named
Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday, the league
office announced. He is the third Akron baseball player to receive
league honors this season.
Turocy (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) posted the first complete-game
shutout of his career in a 5-0 victory over Northern Illinois, the
MAC's top hitting club, Saturday at Lee Jackson Field. It was
Akron's first nine-inning, complete-game shutout in nearly two
years.
In all, Turocy (1-1) scattered seven hits and struck out seven,
while walking none, in earning his first win of 2007.
The right-hander is the second Zips hurler to earn pitcher of the
week honors with the other being senior
Billy McKinney (Loveland,
Ohio/Kings), who was announced on March 9. Outfielder
Charlie Lenhard (Columbus,
Ohio/Upper Arlington) was named MAC East Player of the Week on
March 13.
Turocy and the Zips will wrap up their five-game homestand Tuesday
afternoon with a 3 o'clock game against Malone College at Lee
Jackson Field. The non-conference contest will kick-off a busy week
for UA, which also plays at Duquesne Wednesday at 3 p.m. before
opening a three-game series at Western Michigan beginning Friday at
3 p.m.
Akron enters the week with the third-ranked offense in the
conference (.279) and remains the MAC's top fielding club with a
fielding percentage of .978 and a league-low 17 errors. The Zips
currently stand in third place in the MAC East Division with a 2-4
league mark.
