Akron MSOC Climbs Polls; Sipos Honored
October 23 | Men's Soccer
AKRON After shutout wins over Penn State and Bowling
Green this past week, the University of Akron men's soccer team
climbed in all four national polls, reaching as high as 16 in two
publications. Also, a key component to the Zips' defense in the
shutouts, senior Corey Sipos, was honored by two national
publications.
Akron, who has posted six straight shutouts and has only allowed
one goal over its last nine matches, moved three spots to 16th in
the College Soccer News poll, five sports to 16th in the Soccer
Times poll, six spots to 17th in the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America/adidas poll and three spots to 22nd in the
Soccer America poll.
In addition to team recognition, Akron had an individual honored
this past week. Sipos was named to the College Soccer News National
Team of the Week, while TopDrawerSoccer.com listed the Tucson,
Ariz., on its Team of the Week as well. As the centerback on
defense, Sipos led a unit that only allowed 15 shots between Penn
State (8) and Bowling Green (7) last week, with none of those being
on goal. In addition to his contribution on the defense, Sipos
scored a goal in the Zips' 4-0 blanking of Bowling Green.
Also, junior goalkeeper Evan Bush has not allowed a goal since a
first-half tally in a 2-1 win over nationally-ranked UIC on Sept.
13, a span of 880:32.
The Zips face Michigan, who is ranked ninth in the region, on
Wednesday in Ann Arbor at 7 pm. Two days later, Akron will travel
to Buffalo to face the Bulls in a battle for first place in the
Mid-American Conference. Match time there is set for 7 pm as
well.
