#19 Akron To Send Off MSOC Seniors Saturday

AKRON The 19th-ranked University of Akron men's soccer team will play its final regular-season home match of the 2007 season, hosting Bowling Green Saturday at 7:30 pm and honoring seniors Matt Augustin, Elliot Bradbrook, Steve Kalan, Devin McKenney, Pablo Moreira and Corey Sipos in a pre-game ceremony.
The Zips enter the match with a 9-2-2 record 1-0-1 in the Mid-American Conference have posted five straight shutouts and held their opponents scoreless in seven of their last eight.
"These six seniors are the epitome of what we desire our student-athletes to represent as members of our soccer program," said head coach Caleb Porter. "Not only have they raised the bar with their performance on the field, but they have achieved high levels of success in the classroom as well. More importantly, they have done both the right way with class, character, honesty and integrity at all times. I can say with the greatest confidence that they will all continue to be successful in whatever life has in store for them."
From 2004-07,
the Akron men's soccer team:
- Has won two MAC Championships (2005 and 2006) and two MAC
Tournament Titles (2004 and 2005)
- Played in two NCAA Tournaments, reaching the quarterfinals in
2005
- Has posted a 53-13-10 record overall for their careers and posted
a home record of 32-2-5, not losing in 14 straight
- Helped the Zips be ranked first in the NCAA in 2005, becoming the
first MAC school be ranked No. 1
- Helped Akron be nationally ranked in each of their four
years
After hosting Bowling Green, Akron will close the regular season with four straight matches on the road, including contests at Michigan (Oct. 24), at Buffalo (Oct. 26), at Oakland (Oct. 31) and at Western Michigan (Nov. 3). The MAC Championships start Nov. 13 with a play-in game. The semifinals (Nov. 16) and championship (Nov. 18) will be played at the top seed's facility.

2007: As a starter for all 13 games to date, Matt has helped the Zips post eight shutouts (including five straight) ... Prior to Wednesday's shutout win over Penn State, the Zips ranked 10th in the nation in shutout percentage and 12th in the nation in win-loss percentage ... Also, Akron has only allowed nine goals in 13 matches to lead the MAC ... Had an assist on the game-winning goal versus nationally-ranked UIC ... The next match, added another assist.
2006: Appeared in 11 games, making 10 starts ... Part of a back line that posted nine shutouts on the season ... Hampered by injury early in the season ... Started a three-game stretch from Oct. 18-24 as the Zips went 3-0 and out-scored their opponent, 9-1.
2005:Started all 21 games played ... Scored his first career goal at Connecticut as the Zips advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament ... Contributed to a school-record 15 shutouts amongst defenders on the season ... Member of a defense that led the nation in goals-against average (0.50) ... Had an assist in a 3-0 win at Buffalo.
2004:Appeared in 14 games, making 13 starts, including the final eight matches of the season ... Gained valuable experience in the backfield under the tutelage of four-time All-MAC performer Cameron Knowles ... Played a pivotal role in five Akron shutouts, including a 4-0 romp over MAC foe Bowling Green.

2007:Has started all 12 matches he has played this season ... A versatile player, seeing action in the midfield and as a defender ... Has also helped the Zips' defensive prowess while ranking among the team leaders in shots per match (1.09) ... Ranks fourth on the team in points with seven (three goals and one assist ... Named MAC Player of the Week on Sept. 17 after leading the team to a pair of victories ... In a 2-1 win over 25th-ranked UIC, scored the game winner in the 82nd minute and notched an assist on Akron's other goal ... At St. Francis (Pa.), scored an insurance goal in the second half, helping the Zips to a 4-0 victory ... Scored the first UA goal of the season, unassisted, in the Zips' 3-1 win over #10 New Mexico.
2006:Appeared in all 19 games, making 15 starts ... Tallied his first goal in the Blue and Gold in an 8-2 win over Bowling Green in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament ... Also recorded an assist in the game ... Finished the year with 22 shot attempts, sixth on the squad.
2005 at Ashland:Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference first team selection ... NSCAA Division II third-team All-American in 2005 ... First team all-region with 11 goals and two assists ... Helped lead the Eagles to the GLIAC championship.
2004 at Ashland:GLIAC Freshman of the Year after recording team-best eight goals, along with two assists ... Also a third-team All-Great Lakes Region selection.

2007:Has started all 13 matches in the UA midfield ... Is coming off an impressive match, accounting for two of the Zips' three goals in a 3-0 victory over Penn State ... Scored what proved to be the game winner in the first half, then assisted on UA's final goal ... Had an assist in Akron's season-opening win over #10 New Mexico ... Added as assist versus St. Francis and one versus Hartwick, which proved to be the game winner.
2006:Started all 19 games ... First team All-MAC selection ... Second team All-Ohio ... Academic All-MAC honoree ... Posted at least a 3.0 GPA for the academic year to be named a Scholar-Baller ...
