ATHENS, Ohio - The University of Akron baseball team (13-29, 7-12) dropped game two of the weekend series with Ohio University (16-22, 8-11) at Bob Wren Field, 5-2 on Saturday evening, evening the series at one apiece. After scoring 14 runs on 15 hits on Friday night, UA could manage just two runs on seven hits, four of which came from the top two spots in the line-up.
The Zips found plenty of chances early in the ball game, starting off with back-to-back singles and then loading the bases with no outs on an Ohio fielding error. Though Akron could not get a runner to cross the plate as Anthony Gressick retired the next three batters in a row to keep the game scoreless.
However, the Bobcats were able to match the Zips quick start and score, getting three straight singles to plate the games first run. Gressick helped his own cause with the RBI-single to put his team on top early. Ohio could not manage anything else in the first as Frank Turocy (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) retired the final two batters he faced and picked a runner off at first.
Akron tied the game in the top of the third with a solo-home run by Scott Gunn (Toledo, Ohio/St Francis de Sales), his fifth of the season. In the bottom of the inning, the Bobcats quickly reclaimed the lead at 2-1 by putting a string three more hits together to score their run.
Leading by one in the seventh, the Bobcats added a pair of runs,
one unearned, on two hits, chasing Turocy from the game with a pair
of runners on and just one out. Pat Watt (Struthers,
Ohio/Struthers) entered the game for Turocy and retired the two
batters he faced, surrendering one of his inherited runners. Watt
pitched the final 1 2/3 innings allowing a run on just one hit.

Leading off the bottom of the eighth, Bryant Witt doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Chris Klimko. The Zips trailed 5-1 entering the ninth, but put the first two runners on base. However, they could only manage a single run as Gressick finished his first complete game of the season and remained perfect on the season at 4-0.
Entering the game, Ohio had two players with double-digit game hitting streaks. With his double in the eighth, Witt extended his hit-streak to a team season-high 18 games, while Willie Walker trails that mark by just one game at 17-straight. OU had a third player join the club on Saturday, as Dusty Hammond went 2-for-3 to extend his hit streak to ten games.
Turocy finished the game going 6 1/3 innings, his second longest outing of the season, giving up four runs on 10 hits. In four of his five losses this season, he has allowed three or less earned runs. In fact, in three of the losses he has allowed just one earned run to score and that proved to be the margin of defeat in each game.
The Zips will look to win their third-straight weekend series as they conclude their three-game set with Ohio University of Sunday afternoon. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (EDT).
