Davidson Recognized By College Baseball Foundation

AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron sophomore catcher/first baseman Kurt Davidson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was one of 39 players recognized on the National Honor Roll presented by the College Baseball Foundation, which was released on Tuesday.
Recently named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, Davidson put forth one of the best efforts nationally against Pittsburgh and the Mid-American Conference's top team, Kent State. He guided the Zips to a 2-1 record over the week as the Zips continue to finish the 2006 season strong.
Davidson led the team with a .545 batting average (6-for-11), with three walks, two grand slams, a double and 11 RBIs as the Zips went 2-1. In Akron's win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday, May 9, Davidson went 2-for-4 with six RBIs, including the game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to put the Zips up a run.
Against Kent State, Davidson once again hit the eventual game-winning grand slam in the seventh inning giving Akron a three-run lead, which they would hold on to and win 8-6. He went 3-for-4 in the game, with a walk and a double to go with his 12th home run, while also driving in six runs. His 12th home run ties two former Zips for second on the single-season home run chart. In fact, Davidson continue to swing a hot bat on Sunday as he was 2-for-2, with a two-run HR and a double. However, the stats were erased because the game was cancelled due to rain.

The Zips will conclude the 2006 regular-season with two mid-week non-conference games. They will travel to West Virignia for a game this evening, starting at 7 p.m. (EDT) and then face Cleveland State at 3 p.m. in Cleveland on Wednesday. Akron will then wrap up MAC play with a three-game set against Miami (Ohio), starting on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Lee Jackson Field. On Friday, UA will honor its seniors before the 3 p.m. contest and on Saturday the Zips will recognize former head coach Dave Fross and the 1996 MAC tournament champions. prior to the 1 p.m. start.
