Zips Women in First After Day One of NE Ohio Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - Freshman Stevi Large (Somerset, Ohio/Sheridan HS) led the University of Akron women's track and field team to a 1-3-4 finish in the hammer throw and Andy Nicholas of Kent State captured the men's hammer on the opening day of competition at the Northeast Ohio Invitational at the Lee Jackson Track and Field Complex.
Large's win, coupled with a third-place showing by Amy Lavalley (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor HS) and fourth-place effort by Jenna Strouse (Mt. Vernon, Ohio/Mt. Vernon HS), gave the Zips 20 team points. Large posted a toss of 181-11, an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Lavalley went 175-08 and Strouse posted a mark of 174-04.
The UA women lead the five-team field which includes Kent State, Buffalo, Youngstown State and Ashland. Kelly Braden's second-place finish in the hammer (180-07) put the Golden Flashes in second with eight points.
Just one event was scheduled for both the men and women today, with the bulk of the meet taking place tomorrow.
Nicholas' NCAA regional qualifying toss of 202-07 and Jaroslaw Zakrzewski's regional mark of 194-09 gave Kent State a 1-2 finish in the hammer.
The Golden Flashes lead the men's five-team field with 22 points. Youngstown State is second (6) and Akron third (2).
Junior Randall Hafner (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS), the only Zips competitor in the event, collected two points in the hammer with a throw of 182-04.
Saturday's action gets underway at 11 a.m. with the women's
javelin. The first running events are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
with the men and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
