CLEVELAND - University of Akron swimmer Megan Walters (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) was named Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Thursday.
Walters, who maintains a 3.81 grade-point average in political science and criminal justice, was honored last weekend as the 2006 MAC Most Outstanding Senior for her performances in and out of the pool. She finished the MAC Championships with a program-best mark and second-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.40. Walters also posted a fifth-place showing in the 500 freestyle with a season-best time of 4:56.12 and placed seventh in the 100 freestyle in a school-record time of 52.00.
Eastern Michigan's Corey Nowitzke (track and field) received the male scholar-athlete award. Sophomore Tom Farmer (Berea, Ohio/Berea HS) was Akron's nominee after picking up his first win of the season in the Zips' three-game sweep of Morehead State University last weekend.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a
conference male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative
grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that
week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the
conferences faculty athletics representatives.
