TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Akron swimming and diving team (5-7-1, 1-5-1 MAC), behind a two-win performance by junior Danielle Béland (Ottawa, Ontario-St. Peters), fell 195-101 in its regular season finale against the Toledo Rockets (6-4-1, 3-3-1 MAC) Saturday at the UT Student Recreation Center in Toledo, Ohio.
The loss ended the Zips' chances for a .500 record this season and the fifth-consecutive season with a record at or above the .500 mark. Akron closed out the 2005-06 regular season with a winning percentage of .420.
"We had some good swims today and did show some life at times, but I would have liked to have seen a better team effort," head coach Brian Vereb said. "We are short on rest right now and we need to refocus ourselves for our run at the MAC Championship meet."
Béland, who is 29-4 over the last two seasons in butterfly competition, capped off a perfect season in the butterfly events with a win in the 100 fly (57.22) and a victory and the pool record in the 200 fly (2:03.69). She broke the previous record of 2:03.93 which stood for nearly eight years (1997).
Melissa Young (North Canton, Ohio-West Chester University (Pa.)) touched the wall in a time of 1:06.60 to win the 100 breaststroke while Megan Walters(Columbus, Ind.-Columbus North) won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:07.32.
Cheri Baratto (Clinton, Ind.-South Vermillion HS) posted an impressive time in the 200 breaststroke, swimming to a personal-best mark of 2:25.17 to finish in second place.
The Zips will take nearly three weeks off before returning to
action when they play host to the 2006 Mid-American Conference
Swimming and Diving Championships February 23-25 at the Ocasek
Natatorium in Akron, Ohio.
