Women?s Soccer Tops Kent State, 2-0
October 22 | Women's Soccer
A pair of unassisted goals in the first half helped the
University of Akron to a 2-0 win over rival Kent State on Sunday in
a Mid-American Conference women's soccer match played under cold,
rainy and windy conditions at Lee Jackson Field.
The eventual game-winning score came from the foot of Danielle Walsh (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield HS) off
a free kick at 9:10. Somewhat aided by the day's 20 mph wind, Walsh
sent her high arching kick from 30 yards out over the finger tips
of Kent State (8-9-1, 5-5-0 MAC) goalkeeper Alicia Fernandez. It
was Walsh's second score of the season, and first collegiate
gamewinner.
Akron (11-6-0, 4-6-0 MAC) put in an insurance goal at 37:49, with
Jess Pomfret (Chippenham, England/Hardenhuish
School) being responsible. Pomfret controlled a ball that had been
deflected by Fernandez off the post. It was her first goal of the
campaign.
Fernandez had five saves in the losing effort, while UA 'keeper Krystin Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson HS) notched
her 10th win and sixth shutout of the season. She had six saves in
guiding the Zips to their league-high ninth shutout of the year,
and first program win over the Golden Flashes.
KSU led in the shot category, 13-10, and UA led the shots-on-goal
column, 7-6. The Zips were caught offsides six times.
Sunday served as Senior Day for UA, with Megan Olberding (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS),
Jacque Pitchford (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton HS) and
Amee Thompson (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington HS)
being honored in a pre-game ceremony.
Akron closes the regular season on Thursday at Ohio. Game time is
set for 3 p.m. EDT.
