AKRON, Ohio - One second-half goal was all Old Dominion needed to top The University of Akron women's soccer team and capture the Westfield Cup title Saturday, with a 1-0 preseason victory at Lee Jackson Field.
Katie Watson lofted the ball from 20 yards out into the right corner of the net at 58:54 to put ODU on the board. The goal was one of its six shots in an opening half in which it outshot Akron 6-0.
However, many of the offensive highlights in the second half came courtesy of the Zips, who won the shot margin for that period 5-1. UA had numerous scoring chances late, many off corner kick opportunities, but could not convert.
"Offensively I was proud of the team because they did not give up and hung in until the end," Akron head coach Catherine Byrne said. "That's been the attitude all preseason, and when you play with that type of intensity things will eventually break your way. Also, our defense did a great job tonight fending off a very active Old Dominion offense."
Sophomore goalkeeper Krystin Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson HS), one of three Zips named to the all-tournament team, anchored the stingy UA defensive squad, making two saves in 90 minutes of work. Joining her on the all-tourney squad was fellow defender sophomore Kathy Tegge (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield HS) and freshman midfielder Jessica Fix (Irwin, Pa./Norwin HS).
ODU utilized a pair of goalkeepers, with Colby Owen covering the
net in the first half and Lauren Tupman handling things in the
second period. Tupman made two saves.

No. 19 Florida defeated Jacksonville State 3-1 in Saturday's consolation match. That game was delayed twice due to lightning. JSU took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute, but Florida found the net three times, in the 59th,68th and 86th minutes, to seal things.
Westfield Cup, sponsored by Westfield Insurance and Westfield Foundation, wraps up Sunday with the consolation and title matches for the men's bracket. No. 9 UConn and No. 10 SMU face off in consolation play at 1 p.m. ET, while Akron and No. 3 Maryland meet for the championship at 3:30 p.m.
Akron's women's squad opens its regular season by playing host to the fifth-annual Caroline Pardee Invitational August 26 and 28 at Lee Jackson Field. The Zips face St. Francis (Pa.) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The four-team field also features Canisius and Morehead State. Those two squads meet Friday at 5 p.m.
