One of the mainstays of UA athletics in the mid-30s, Robert Bauer played tackle and guard under Hall of Fame coaches, Howard “Red” Blair (1934-35) and James Aiken (1936). He also lettered two seasons (1935-37) in basketball. In 1935, Bauer helped “Red” Blair depart Akron as a volunteer when the Zippers compiled a 6-3 record. However, the 5-10, 175-pounder saved his best for his senior campaign. While serving as tri-captain, along with Hall of Famer Mike Krino and Ernie Kaufman, Bauer earned first team All-Ohio and All-Ohio Conference honors as UA recorded a 6-2-1 slate. He figured prominently in the 6-0 victory over Kent Stat and in the comeback tie with Mt. Union. The Akron native, who learned his basketball from Hall of Fame coach Russ Beichly at West High School, also played guard on the 1935-36 cager squad that won eight of 14 games and served as captain on the 1936-37 team that compiled an 8-5 record. Bauer passed away on February 18, 1987.
