Offensive Lineman

For the most part, offensive lineman in football are taken for granted. When it comes to linemen, who gets all the publicity? Defensive lineman! Tonight an interior offensive lineman is brought out of the darkness and into the spotlight. Dick Case is the epitome of those lineman, sometimes referred to as “Hogs”, who labored in the trenches without fanfare. He joins the ranks of other Hall of Fame interior lineman such as Andy Maluke, Earl Hensal, Dave Adolph, Tony Butowicz and Mark Vanhorn. Ironically, Case, who played for the legendary Eddie Wentz at Akron St. Vincent’s High School, lettered his freshman year season as defensive tackle. Case’s play helped first-year coach Gordon Larson and UA compile a 6-2 record to turn around the floundering Zip grid program that had won only one of nine games in 1960. Case quickly became a mainstay at left tackle, opening holes for such backs as George Deo, John Lahoski and Darrington Seals, all Hall of Famer. During his three seasons as a starter on the offensive line, the Zips compiled records of 7-2 in 1962, and 6-3 in both 19633 and ’64. Those final two campaigns, Case was voted UA’s Most Outstanding Lineman both seasons, was selected first team All-Ohio Conference in 1963 and in 1964 served as team captain. After graduating in 1966, Case rose to rank of Captain while serving with the U.S. Army that included a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. For the past 20 years, Case has been on the manufacturing management with various area companies and is currently self-employed as a manufacturing consultant. He and his wife, Rita, a teacher at Garfield High School, have two sons, Michael and David. The Cases reside in Tallmadge.
