INAUGURAL CLASS
1909-12
Baseball | Basketball | Football
Fullback
A 1909 Akron Central High School graduate, Lee Jackson attended Buchtel College where he played three sports under coach Clarence Weed in 1909-10 and under coach Frank Haggerty (1911-13). Regarded as one of the greatest UA fullbacks of all-time, Jackson was a member of the 1910 team that beat Oberlin (the only team to do so) and claimed the state title in football.
Haggerty: “Since leaving Akron, I have refereed 500 athletic contests in 10 states, coached a national winner in football and had a team tie for the professional championship in the same sport. But, I have yet to see a better football player than Jackson.”
After graduating, Jackson rose steadily to a position of executive importance at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, eventually becoming president and the chairman of the board of directors.
