Gaining recognition in so-called “minor sport” is difficult for the most part but, not so for Larry Wormald, Wrestling was Wormald’s forte. During the years 1975 thru 1960, Larry was the best 147-pound wrestler in Ohio Conference. While toiling for Head Coach Andy Maluke, the Hall of Famer who passed away in 1987, Wormald compiled a 45-6 match record. Included in that mark was 30 consecutive dual match victories. Wormald gave notice to the Ohio Conference during his freshman season that he was to be reckoned with by finishing second in the championship. He lived up to his potential by capturing the 147-pound title the next three seasons. He also enjoyed success over the four years in amateur championships, finishing third in the Lake Erie AAU in 1959 and second in 1960. His senior campaign, Wormald was voted UA’s Most Outstanding Wrestler and capped his wrestling career by finishing second in the 135-pound class at the 1980 National AAU Championship.
