Another transplant who came to the University and left his mark. Born in Baltimore, Md., “Igs” Florin was all-everything in football and basketball at St. Vincent for Eddie Wentz. Attracted by the city lights of Chicago, “Igs” decided to attend St. Viators College. However, the college folded after one year and he transferred to Akon where he played in the backfield of the two finest teams in the school’s history. Florin was the extra-point kicker, workhouse fullback and blocking back in the backfield that included Kenneth “Red” Cochrane and Harold “Peg” squad compiled a 9-1 record and the Zippers were 7-1 in 1930. “Igs” did most of the work and I got all the glory,” said Cochrane. Florin also lettered two years in basketball as a guard for Howard “Red” Blair and one year on the baseball team as an infielder and relief pitcher. He passed away in 1963 at the age of 55.
