A 1917 graduate of Akron West High School where he earned All-City football and basketball recognition, Edward Wentz played basketball at Akron for three seasons.
Coach Fred Sefton who said of his 6-2 ½ inch center: “Wentz made me look like a good basketball coach for three seasons. He had it. Never knew him to get excited over the four years (1917-21) he was at the University. ‘Cripes’ was the strongest word I ever knew him to use.”
During Wentz’ three seasons as regular center, Akron won 37 of 41 basketball starts, including 22 in a row, 14 straight in 1919 and the first eight in 1920 before being upended by arch-rival Wittenberg. Wentz scored 266 points (1919), 244 (1920) and 215 (1921) for a grand total of 725 points in 36 games, including 30 against Kenyon (1919) and 31 against Defiance (1921). His average, three-year and one-year totals and high game constituted records.
Wentz played industrial baseball (Goodyear, General) and professional basketball with the Dover All-Stars. He coached football, basketball, and golf at St. Vincent High School (1924-64).
