The first Academic All-American in Akron soccer history, Justin Millard had an outstanding career with the Zips.
The first season Millard helped UA compiled in 11-5-2 record and win the MAC title with 5-0 mark. Besides his outstanding defensive player, Millard also had three assists and scored two goals, including the winning goal in a 1-0 win over Bowling Green (BG). Those performances earned Millard first team All-MAC honors as well as, MAC Newcomer of the year. Thanks to Millard ‘s 3.94 grade point average in biology, he was accorded first team District IV GTE Academic All-America honors as UA slipped to a 9-9-1 record in 1996. Both honors were repeated his last two seasons.
Behind Millard’s play and that of others, UA regained its form in 1997 by compiling a 14-5-2 record and again grabbed the MAC crown. Millard had his best offensive output of his career with two goals and eight assists. He was selected MAC Athlete of the Week on September 23 after three wins, one a shout out, where he had two assists and one goal. His performance and grade point average earned him first team All MAC honors and he became the first UA soccer player to ever be accorded national academia honors when he was voted second team GTE Academic All-America.
A season later Millard closed out his career by helping the Zips put and capture both the MAC regular season and the Tournament Championships for get back to the NCAA I Tournament for the first time since 1986. Millard voted the Zips’ Most Outstanding Defensive Player, also helped the offense when he kicked two goals, including game winner over Xavier, and had seven assists. Again his play earned him first team All-Great Lakes Region and he was upgraded to the GTE Academic All America first team.
Later, Millard’s excellence in the classroom earned him a $5,000 NCAA postgraduate scholarship. After graduating from the medical school at The University of Cincinnati, he completed an internship and residency at the University of Florida.
