A 1931 East High School graduate and three-sport, nine-time letterwinner at The University of Akron, Appleby competed in varsity football (1932, 1933, 1934) as an end, varsity basketball as a guard (1933, 1934, 1935), and varsity track (1933, 1934, 1935) as a high and low hurdler, broad jumper, and pole vaulter. The high scorer in the 1933 track season with 104.5 points, he owned school records in 120 high hurdles, pole vault, and broad jump. Selected UA’s Athlete of the Year in 1935, Appleby was a member of the 1934 Akron basketball team that won the Ohio Conference title.
Appleby was a successful Akron high school coach with a number of city and district cross country champions to his credit.
In 1967, he was inducted into the Summit Country Sports Hall of Fame.
