Throughout UA athletic history, there have been several brother combinations that have made lasting contributions to the University cause, such as the Knowlton’s, the Adolph’s, the Zwisler’s and the Holian’s. Out of Berea, Ohio came the Holians, Dave, Bob and Mike. Dave, the oldest, has the distinction of being first. From 1966 through 1969, Dave was a starter for Gordon Larson—splitting his time between middle guard and tackle on defense. During those four seasons the Zips compiled a 26-10 record, including a 7-2-1 mark that led UA’s first post-season bowl (Grantland Rice) appearance in 1968, and a 9-1 record in 1969 to match UA previous all-time best team of 1926. That 1969 team finished third in the Associated Press poll-UA’s highest ranking. Dave not only captured that outstanding 1969 squad but garnered his highest honors for his performance. He earned the Fred Sefton Award for outstanding defensive performance and was selected UA’s most valuable lineman. Dave topped off those honors by earning honorable mention on the Associated Press’ small college All-American team. Dave, who also earned two letters in wrestling, has spent time as a teacher and football and wrestling coach at St. Edwards High School in Lakewood, Ohio.
