Former three-time team captain Sophia Geier is in her first season as the team’s graduate assistant coach in 2019-20.
A four-year letterwinner for the Zips, Geier served as a team captain as a sophomore, junior, and senior. Named the 2017 and 2019 MAC Player of the Year, Geier was a two-time first-team All-MAC selection and a three-time Academic All-MAC pick. Twice selected as the MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete, she was a three-time recipient of the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award.
Twice named Akron’s Most Valuable Player, Geier concluded her collegiate career in 2018-19 ranked No. 2 on Akron’s all-time list for singles wins (106) and combined wins (177). She also ranked No. 11 in doubles wins (71).
As a senior, Geier participated in the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships. She went undefeated against all MAC opponents at the No. 1 singles spot (7-0 in regular season and 2-0 in MAC tourney play). She went 29-4 in singles action overall, including 2-1 in spring action, all at No. 1. Geier paired with Anna Uljanov at No. 2 doubles where the duo went 16-7 overall.
A native of Burgebrach, Germany, Geier earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2018. She is pursuing a master’s degree in business administration.
