Former Zip Shannon Newnes is in her second season as the team’s graduate assistant coach in 2018-19.
A three-year letterwinner for the Zips, Newnes served as a team captain as a junior and senior. She was the recipient of the 2017 MAC Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award and the 2017 Coaches Award (team award). Newnes completed her collegiate career with a 39-32 overall record in singles, inlcuding 15-1 at the No. 6 spot. In doubles, she was 12-9 at No. 3.
As a senior, Newnes finished 19-5 overall, including 13-2 in the spring. She remained undefeated in singles action until the final regular-season match. Newnes was named the MAC Singles Player of the Week and the Zips’ Student-Athlete of the Week (April 17) after beating beat Bowling Green’s Ayumo Sasaki in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 4 singles in her final home match, pushing her singles mark to 13-0.
During her prep career at the Freedom School, Newnes placed second in the country at the U16. She won at the London Nike Masters junior tour and was the runner-up at British Lawn Tennis Association Masters. Newnes competed in nationals every year from 2009 until graduating high school while making quarterfinals in 2012.
A native of London, England, Newnes earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2017. She is pursuing a master’s degree in sports administration.
