Junior (2008): Started all 12 games at center ... Part of the Akron line that was named MAC East Offensive Players of the Week for the Zips offensive excellence versus Toledo ... Akron gained 478 yards of total offense and scored five touchdowns as Dennis Kennedy rushed for 153 yards and Chris Jacquemain threw three TDs and 226 yards ... As the lone new starter on the 2008 offensive line, helped the UA offense improve in the NCAA in rushing offense (90th to 45th), passing offense (100th to 46th) and total offense (111th to 40th) ... Also, the Zips’ offensive line only allowed 1.5 sacks per game, 33rd-best in the NCAA ... However, when you exclude teams that primarily run the ball, the Zips ranked among the top 15 nationally in protecting the quarterback.
Sophomore (2007): Played in five games, getting two starting assignments ... First career start came versus Kent State and he only had one day (a Friday walk through) to prepare as regular starter, Mike Schepp, was injured late in a Thursday practice ... Bates came through with an admirable performance, handling all the shot-gun snaps well as the Zips won back the Wagon Wheel with a 27-20 victory ... Also started at right guard at Bowling Green ... Also served as backup center and guard at Connecticut, Buffalo and Central Michigan.
Redshirt Freshman (2006): Saw action in the North Texas and Buffalo games.
Freshman (2005): Redshirted.
Prior to Akron: A first-team All-Pennsylvania selection as a senior, totaling 63 tackles, including 14 for loss, and two sacks ... Allowed no sacks along the offensive line as Chartiers-Houston, which finished with a 7-3 record ... Two-time first-team All-Black Hills Conference pick ... Posted the fastest 40-yard dash time among all offensive linemen at the 2004 Ohio State Nike Camp ... 2004 The Almanac All-Star ... Named to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 ... Second-team All-State in 2003 ... First junior captain in head coach John Haught’s 29-year coaching career ... Qualified for the 2004 WPIAL Class AA track and field championships ... Class AA runner-up in the heavyweight division of the WPIAL wrestling championships as a junior.
