Chris Cook enters his first season in 2019 at the University of Akron as the Zips’ tight ends/offensive tackles coach.
He followed head coach Tom Arth from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga after two seasons. Cook served as the Mocs' tight ends/tackles coach. He added recruiting coordinator to his duties in 2018. A former UTC All-American, Cook helped TE Bailey Lenior to All-Southern Conference recognition in 2017.
Cook returned to his alma mater UTC after serving as the offensive quality control coordinator and assisting with the offensive line at East Carolina University.
A three-year letterwinner (2001-03) and All-American center for the Mocs in 2002. Cook was also named offensive MVP in 2002. He. graduated from UTC with a bachelor's degree in communications and a minor in psychology in 2009.
After his college career, Cook pursued a professional football career playing in the Arena Football League - Kansas City Brigade (2007-09). Prior to signing with the Brigade, Cook worked out for the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, and Indianapolis Colts.
In 2015, Cook served as defensive line coach and was named defensive coordinator at Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C. prior to joining Scottie Montgomery's staff at ECU. He helped the Patriots to a second round NCHSAA playoff appearance. The defensive unit held opposing offenses to seven points or less six times in 2015, including two shutouts.
Cook served as director of the Boys & Girls Club - Teen Center in Raleigh, N.C. from 2010-15. During that time, he spent each year working with the Duke football staff at their high school prospect camps.
In 2009, he served as the defensive line coach at Weddington High School where he coached former University of Maryland defensive lineman Darius Kilgo, who was drafted in the sixth round by the Denver Broncos in 2015.
In the summers of 2018 and 2019, Cook was selected by the NFL for the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. He worked with the Atlanta Falcons.
A native of Wingate, N.C., Cook, 37, and his wife Mandisa have two children, Mayor (5) and Paige (4).
