Steve Zakuani (2007-08, men's soccer)
What makes you most proud to be a Zip?
I’m proud of the friends I made, the experiences I had around campus, and to have had great teammates during my time. Winning a lot of games was pretty good as well.
How are you and your family doing during this time?
We’re doing great. More time with the family is always a good thing. We’re watching a lot of TV, doing a lot of cooking, and there are lots of card games being played.
Any messages of hope or inspiration for fellow Zips out there during our current stay-at-home orders?
Focus on what you can control and try to make the best of these strange times we are living in. Eventually, we will get through this together.
What is your current job, title, ect. that are keeping you busy these days?
I wear many hats. I work on TV as a soccer analyst, I do a lot of corporate public speaking, I coach soccer, and I run a foundation. All of those things are on hold right now and it’s been good to have a little break while I stay home with my family.
What are your favorite memories on court, field, etc.?
I can remember almost every goal I scored and those are good memories. But the best memories are the times I spent with my teammates at practice and away from the pitch just hanging out. The late-night drives to Taco Bell drive-thru with my roommates a few hours before practice bring a smile to my face.
Being a student-athlete requires a lot of time management. How have you learned to do so?
It’s an ongoing process for me. Some days I manage my time really well and other days I don’t. But what helps is when I’m able to prioritize things by order of importance and keep the main thing the main thing.
