Anthony Ampaipitakwong (2007-10, men's soccer)
What makes you most proud to be a Zip?
The passion that was displayed from our students, supporters, fans, alums, and being able to bring a National Championship to Akron.
How are you and your family doing during this time?
A lot of time on my hands in Thailand. Figuring ways to work out from home and also picking up hobbies to pass time like cooking, reading, playing some guitar, and quality wine never hurts.
Any messages of hope or inspiration for fellow Zips out there during our current stay-at-home orders?
We are all in this together. I live on the other side of the world and seen terrible things to say the least. Your situation can always be looked at in a positive way. Many people have it worse.
Do you have any work from home tips that you have learned while quarantined?
For home workouts I am YouTubing workouts and also my team does a Zoom call and we follow the fitness coach. Kind of weird at first, but it gets the job done.
What is your current job, title, ect. that are keeping you busy these days?
Current job is a professional soccer player in Thailand. I have to find different ways to be active while in quarantine.
What was/were the deciding factors(s) that brought you to Akron?
Caleb Porter was one of the biggest factors for my decision.Â
What was/were your first impression(s) of Akron?
Wow, where am I? But I grew to love the place.Â
What makes being a student-athlete at Akron unique?
The ability to have a college social life while still being able to play a childhood game that you love. Best of both worlds.
What are your favorite memories on court, field, etc.?
Winning home games in front of our students and fans, then ultimately winning the National Championship in Santa Barbara.
One of the best aspects of being a student-athlete is teammate camaraderie. Give us an example from your experience as a student-athlete.
I’d say the reason we were so successful on the field was because of the field we were brothers. We did everything together.
What is your personal success story?
Being able to win at Akron my senior year was all the success I needed. It was icing on the cake.
What is it that you have learned from being a student-athlete at Akron that you will use throughout your life after graduation?
Balance. Life is all about balance and with school and soccer it was very important to balance the two. And that has carried in all areas of my life beyond soccer.
How has being a student-athlete at Akron aided in your personal development?
Having a balance lifestyle.Â
Being a student-athlete requires a lot of time management. How have you learned to do so?
Started with the coaching staff and our student counselors kicking our butts to pass each class.
What is your view on the difference between playing and competing?
Playing is only for pure pleasure, while the competing side has pleasure but then comes also a lot of pain if you lose. The stakes are much higher.
Being a student-athlete has high physical demands, but also requires mental toughness as well. What have you done to develop both?
Surrounded my self with people that make me better. Your circle will always have your back and it’s a good feeling to know such.
