George Nanchoff (1973-76, men's soccer)
What makes you most proud to be a Zip?
I am so proud to be a part of such an amazing soccer tradition. When I first arrived in this country with my mother, father, and brother (Louie) I hardly spoke any English. Akron allowed me to receive an education and was willing to be patient with me along the way. Oh yes! I am very proud to have my son (Michael) back working in such a special program.
How are you and your family doing during this time?
My family and I are safe and healthy! My wife and I just completed our move into our new home, so we're very relieved and happy about that.
Any messages of hope or inspiration for fellow Zips out there during our current stay-at-home orders?
I hope everyone is safe and well. I know many people will start getting stir crazy especially now. It is important to be very smart now more than ever so we can resume our normal lifestyle soon. It must be a team effort! I am very proud to live in Ohio because we are doing an amazing job together flattening the curve.
Do you have any work-from-home tips that you learned while quarantined?
Yes! Listen to my wife, Marian, at all times.
What was/were the deciding factors(s) that brought you to Akron?
The real factor was the head coach, Bill Killen, expressed his interest in me and really wanted me to be an Akron soccer player.
What was/were your first impression(s) of Akron?
The first time I came to campus I fell in love with the "CHUCKERY" (it was like the student union). We would play foosball all day long.
What are your favorite memories on court, field, etc.?
My favorite memory was taking road trips in the vans with my teammates! We loved playing a variety of card games. It seemed like every player with different nationalities had something fun to play.
What is your personal success story?
Being a Zip allowed me to receive a college degree and the opportunity to play professionally for 10 amazing years. I am still involved in the game. I can't get enough of it and I'm so grateful because it's given so much to me.
