AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron Department of
Athletics announced on Wednesday its 39th Annual Varsity "A"
Association Sports Hall of Fame inductees.
The class of 2013 – Rick Holman (football),
Jeffrey Lake (football), Kelli
Metzger (softball), Kyle Milligan
(soccer), William Terrell (track) and Mary
Varga Stupczy (track) – will be honored at a banquet
on Friday, Feb. 28 at the University's Quaker Station Ballroom (135
South Broadway Street).
Also being recognized that night will be Kenneth "Red" Cochrane
Meritorious Service Award recipients University of Akron President
Dr. Luis Proenza and Zips Athletics mascot
Zippy, and Mike Krino Varsity "A" Achievement
Award winner Lawrence Dessart.
Kenneth "Red" Cochrane is a former Zips football, basketball and
track student-athlete, football head coach and athletics director.
A charter inductee of the Sports Hall of Fame in 1975, he passed
away in 1998 at age 90.
Mike Krino re-activated the University's A-Men's Association in
1971 and in 1978 changed the name to the Varsity "A" Association.
An All-Ohio member of the Zips football team and later assistant
coach, he passed away in 2004 at age 90. Krino was inducted into
the Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.
The year's nine honorees will take the total in the UA Varsity "A"
Sports Hall of Fame to 371 which includes 308 student-athletes,
coaches and administrators, 37 Kenneth "Red" Cochrane Meritorious
Service Award recipients and 26 Mike Krino Varsity “A”
Achievement awardees.
The festivities on Feb. 28 will begin at 6 p.m. ET with
refreshments and socializing, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the
induction program at 8 p.m., with longtime radio "Voice of the
Zips" Steve French serving as master of ceremony. The cost of the
banquet is $40 per person and $20 for children age 13 and under.
Tables of eight can be reserved for $300. A cash bar will be
available.
The 2013 Class also will be presented at halftime of the Akron
versus Bowling Green men's basketball game on Saturday, March 1 at
James A. Rhodes Arena at 7 p.m.
