AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron Department of
Athletics held its annual Student-Athlete Celebration Banquet to
honor the achievements of the department's 400-plus
student-athletes on Monday night in the ball room of the
University's Student Union.
Student-athletes and coaches from UA's 19 intercollegiate sports
teams along with athletics department staff, invited guests and
dignitaries were on hand to celebrate another year of achievements
for the Zips.
Emceed by Ken Carman from 92.3 The Fan (WKRK-FM), the program
included remarks by Director of Athletics Tom
Wistrcill as well as senior reflections from student-athletes
Tina Dimitrijevs (volleyball) and Troy
Gilmer (football).
Student-athletes were honored for their hard work in their
respective sports and in the classroom with a number of individual
and team awards, including: the Jim Schonover Award (highest team
grade-point average – women's golf for both the 2012 spring
and 2012 fall semesters); the Caroline J. Pardee Award (top female
athlete – Rachel Tecca, women's basketball); the James Horrigan
Award (top male athlete – Scott Caldwell, men's soccer); the Bob Linton Male and
Female Student-Athlete of the Year Awards (Chad
Barson – men's soccer; Tina Dimitrijevs – volleyball); and the male and
female Newcomer of the Year Awards (Alex
McCune – track and field; Alexis Cooks – track and field).
The Zippy Cup for team community service went to the softball
program, which accumulated more than 600 hours during the 2012-13
academic year.
The department also recognized long-time Faculty Athletics
Representative J. Dean Carro, who will be retiring later this
spring. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee presented him with a
gift.
The program concluded with the playing of the annual all-sports
highlight video.
