Here are the top nine moments in Zips women's sports
history:
Basketball
Women's Basketball Has Record-Breaking Season in
2009-10: Akron set numerous school records during its banner
season under head coach Jodi Kest, setting a new program mark for
most wins (18) and most MAC wins (11) in a single season, as well
as most home wins with an 11-2 record at Rhodes Arena. The team
made an appearance in the MAC tournament semifinals and was granted
a postseason berth for just the second time in program history with
a bid to the WBI.
Golf
Women’s Golf Records Record Season: In just four
years of competition, the women’s golf team has grown into a
program that has a chance to win tournaments every week. In
2011-12, the Zips won two team titles, two individual titles and
lost in a playoff by one shot to miss a third team title. Akron set
the 36-hole team score school record (597), saw Kristen Hill earn
First-Team All-MAC for a third consecutive season and was
recognized for its team GPA, which ranked fourth nationally
(3.766).
Rifle
2012 Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference Smallbore Title:
Although the Akron rifle program has captured numerous conference
titles in its history, the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Rifle title in
smallbore was the first time in program history that the Zips
defeated Navy.
Soccer
2009 Mid-American Conference East Division Title: Akron
earned its first conference title in program history as the Zips
ran through MAC East play with a perfect 5-0 record. Akron finished
the season with a program best seven total wins in conference play
and a 7-3-1 MAC record.
Softball
Softball Reaches Back-to-Back NCAA National Championship
Berths: Just four years after the program was established,
Akron rode the postseason wind all the way to the NCAA Division II
National Championship game in 1984 and 1985. The Zips compiled a
99-16 record over the course of those two seasons.
Swimming & Diving
2000 First Zippy Invitational: Akron's swimming &
diving program - in its third year of existence - won the inaugural
Zippy Invitational in thrilling fashion as the Zips came from
behind on the final relay to win the meet by just 12 points over
the 10-team field.
Tennis
Tennis Claims Back-to-Back Mid-American Conference Tournament
Championships: After winning the program's first league
tournament title in 2011, the Zips were repeat victors in 2012.
Both came versus top-seeded Miami (Ohio) and were by a score of
4-3. Additionally, both were comeback victories and were clinched
with a three-set, last-match-on-court decision.
Track & Field/Cross Country
Track & Field/Cross Country Runs Down the Triple
Crown: The Zips became the first program in Mid-American
Conference history to win the women's team titles for Cross
Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track all in the same season in
2005-06. UA dominated the league in all three championships,
winning the cross country title by 23 points, the indoor title by
13.5 points and the outdoor crown by 38 points.
Volleyball
Volleyball Wins MAC East Title in 2002: With four
All-Conference players on its roster, Akron cruised to the
program's second MAC East Division title in 2002 with a 15-3
conference record. The squad also set a school record for most wins
in a season (26) since rally scoring was adopted by the NCAA.
