AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's
basketball, women's basketball, women's cross country and women's
tennis programs received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA
on Wednesday based on their most recent multi-year Academic
Progress Rate (APR).
Each team posted an APR in the top-10 percent of all squads in
their respective sport over the last four reported academic years
(2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12). The APR rating system is a
real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of
student-athletes.
"This is a great achievement for these four programs," UA Director
of Athletics Tom Wistrcill said. "It shows that the
University's support system provides our student-athletes the tools
necessary to balance their commitment to academics and athletics.
Our coaches, staff and those in the campus community who work to
help our student-athletes succeed are to be commended as well."
The APR system was launched in 2004-05. During that time 13 UA
teams have earned a Public Recognition Award, with this year's four
squads being the most in a given year. The Zips women's tennis team
has been so honored each of the last four years, while the women's
cross country program was recognized for the second time ever
(2008-09). The men's and women's basketball squads were honored for
the first time.
Nationally, top performing APRs this year ranged from 978 to a
perfect 1,000, with the majority of teams earning a perfect score.
A total of 268 schools, out of 346 Division I colleges and
universities, placed at least one team on the top APR list.
Full APR scores for all teams will be released on June 11.
