THIS WEEKEND IN ZIPS ATHLETICS ...
Mid-American Conference play starts for Volleyball this weekend with home matches at 7 p.m. tonight vs. Miami (Ohio) and at 5 p.m. tomorrow vs. Bowling Green. Head Coach Ron Arenz and our team are 4-1 at Rhodes Arena and are eager to start MAC play on the right note. Please come out to the JAR if you're in town!
If you're going out of town, hopefully you are traveling with us to the Steel City for our Football game vs. Pittsburgh at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. We received notice from our colleagues at Pitt for our fans to be mindful of the clear bag policy at Heinz Field – more information can be viewed in that link to a video regarding what you are and are not permitted to bring inside this NFL venue.
This is the second-consecutive year our student-athletes have the opportunity to compete in an NFL stadium, as we played last year against UMass at Gillette Stadium (home of the New England Patriots). Our program also previously has played twice at Ford Field in Detroit, twice at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia and once at then-Cleveland Browns Stadium (now FirstEnergy Stadium).
Good luck to Women's Tennis (at Notre Dame Invitational) and Women's Soccer (at Ohio today and at Kent State on Sunday for the first PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge point of the year), who are also competing this weekend.
HOMECOMING COMING SOON
A week from tomorrow, we welcome back all UA alumni and their families as Football plays host to Eastern Michigan in the annual Homecoming game at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. If you have not, or if you know an alumnus who hasn't been back to the University lately, please take the time to return and enjoy our campus and our football stadium. I love meeting Zips upon their first visit after having been away for awhile. It's a great reminder to all of us fortunate to be on this campus every day how special UA is and the transformation it has undergone.
Alumni can purchase a $10 ticket that includes a t-shirt (while supplies last), a voucher for a hot dog and 24-ounce drink. Call 888-99-AKRON and mention "Alumni Ticket Deal" for this offer, and please share it with your friends.
We'll also host our fifth annual Faculty & Staff Tailgate event before the game, welcoming the families and friends of everyone who work on our campus and help our student-athletes. Call 330-972-6920 to purchase a $10 ticket that includes a "Time to Shine" t-shirt and a pre-game meal. (Please note that the meal and t-shirt vouchers are free to those who purchased UA Faculty & Staff football season tickets, but you do need to call to claim your vouchers.)
Also that night, Men's Soccer faces UAB at 7 p.m. Head Coach Jared Embick has brought our team along very quickly since the start of the season and I know you'll enjoy seeing how our young team has come together.
Sandwiching that Homecoming Saturday of Football and Futbol are two Women's Soccer home matches – vs. Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday and vs. Bowling Green at 12 p.m. Sunday.
