A BIG SERIES FOR BASEBALL
This weekend’s Baseball series against Kent State is a big one for the Zips, in more ways than MAC Tournament seeding implications.
The Zips and Golden Flashes will open the series this evening at Canal Park as part of the Ninth-Annual Diamond Classic for the Kids. Admission is $5 per person, with all proceeds going to Akron Children’s Hospital. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
The series will then return to campus, with the Akron and Kent State playing the final two games of the three-game set at Lee R. Jackson Field on Friday and Saturday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on both days.
Friday's game at Jackson Field will serve as Senior Day for our nine seniors, Pat Dyer, Andrew Fanning, Joey Havrilak, Zak Knettel, Matt LaRocca, Dan Lawrence, Jon Pusateri, Matt Rembielak and Darius Washington.
In addition to a full point in the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge on the line, the Zips can lock up a seed in the MAC Tournament with a series sweep. Akron is currently the No. 7 seed and needs to finish ahead of Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) to guarantee a spot in next week's MAC Tournament.
TRACK AND FIELD READY FOR MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Baseball team is not the only squad with a big weekend coming up. The Track and Field squads head to Muncie, Ind., this weekend for the 2015 MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The championship event starts today and will run through Saturday. Both squads look to improve on runner-up finishes at last year’s outdoor championships, while the men’s team looks to sweep the indoor and outdoor titles for the third time in program history.
Like the Baseball team, the Track and Field squads will also battle Kent State for two points in the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge. We currently trail 7.0-5.0 and need all three points to win this year’s challenge.
If you are able to make it to Muncie, I know Coach Mitchell and the student-athletes would love to see you there. If not, make sure to visit GoZips.com, as well as following the Track and Field team on Twitter (@ZipsTFCC) for updates and results.
