FEAR THE ROO AT THE Q …
It’s one of the best weeks of the year for all of us Zips fans, as both our Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams are headed to Cleveland to compete in the Mid-American Conference Tournament with a chance to earn bids to their respective NCAA Tournaments.
Thanks to a dominant 76-52 home victory last night against Northern Illinois, our Men will face Western Michigan at approximately 9 p.m. Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena (our game will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Bowling Green-Eastern Michigan game that tips off at 6:30 p.m.). We need all Zips fans to be loud, cheer on our teams, and buy tickets through our ticket office, and your deadline is 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday – please click here for all ticket information and an order form. You also can call 888-99-AKRON (25766).
Our Women, thanks to our first-ever win at Bowling Green in the regular season finale, earned the No. 3 seed and a bye to the MAC Tournament Quarterfinals, when they will play at the Q approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday (30 minutes after the conclusion of the first Women’s game that day) against the winner of Eastern Michigan-Toledo tomorrow night. We’re looking to repeat as MAC champions and would love your support on our run for another title.
We encourage you to join us at the Winking Lizard, next to the Q at 811 Huron Street, as the Zips pregame headquarters this week, starting two hours prior to each of our games (both Men and Women) in Cleveland.
All information – game times, updated brackets, ticket links, pre-game events and more – is available at our MAC Tournament Central page.
NCAA COMPETITION
It’s time for March Madness, and that means more than basketball – it also means that all of the winter sports are getting ready for their championships. We are fortunate to have four teams sending representatives to their national competitions:
-Track and Field will travel Men and Women to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the NCAA Indoor Championships, sending three men (Shawn Barber, Jordan Latimer and Clayton Murphy) and three women (Alexis Cooks, Brittany Funk and Claudia Garcia Jou)
-Matt Chezem heads off to Fairbanks, Alaska, for the NCAA Rifle Championship this weekend
-Rachel Aepelbacher, Alice Hottensmith and Paige Kelkenberg will compete in the NCAA Diving Zones Friday through Sunday at Ohio State
Good luck to these Zips as they represent our school on the biggest stages in their sports!
VOTE FOR BARBER!
Shawn Barber, the nation’s best pole vaulter, was named a semifinalist for the prestigious Sullivan Award, given to the nation’s top amateur athlete by the AAU. Please help vault Shawn into the finals by voting here – you can vote once per day through Sunday.
Shawn also has been named to the 10-member pre-NCAA indoor Championship Watch List for The Bowerman Award.
