PNC WAGON WHEEL CHALLENGE STARTS FRIDAY WITH
VOLLEYBALL
There’s no better way to start Mid-American Conference play
than against your neighborhood rival!
Tomorrow at 7 p.m., Volleyball faces Kent State at James A. Rhodes Arena.
That match serves as the first contest of the season in the PNC
Wagon Wheel Challenge between UA and KSU. Friday night is also
"Social Media Night" with fans having an opportunity to qualify for
prizes through Facebook and Twitter.
Volleyball continues its weekend homestand on Saturday versus Ohio
at 5 p.m. at JAR.
Tickets for all home matches are available on ZipsTickets.com or by calling
our ticket office at 1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
WOMEN'S SOCCER CONTINUES HOMESTAND
Women's soccer also opens MAC play with a two-match homestand this
weekend. The team faces Miami (Ohio) on Friday at 7 p.m. and
Ball State on Sunday at 1 p.m., both at FirstEnergy Stadium –
Cub Cadet Field.
Friday is themed "Youth Soccer Night" and "Kids Club Night" with
inflatable games and other activities planned for children.
Tickets for all home matches are available on ZipsTickets.com or by calling
our ticket office at 1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
FOOTBALL OPENS MAC PLAY ON THE ROAD
While there is plenty of sports action on campus this weekend,
please don't forget that Football begins its MAC season on the road
at Bowling Green on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The game will be carried
by ESPN3 or you can listen to Steve French, Brad
Detwiler and Joe Dunn on the Akron-IMG Sports Network.
The team returns home to InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field on
Oct. 5 to face Ohio for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
There is also a Faculty and Staff Picnic planned that day from noon to
1:30 p.m. in Coleman Common.
DAMBROT TO LEAD ZIPS FOR NEXT DECADE
Earlier this week we were happy to announce that Men's Basketball
head coach Keith Dambrot had signed a one-year contract extension to keep him with the
program through the 2022-23 season.
Keith signed a ten-year contract in July 2012 and this week's
announcement makes his fixed-year deal one of the longest in the
nation among college coaches in any sport. I know you’re as
thrilled as I am to know he will continue to lead our program for
quite awhile.
BASKETBALL STARTS PRESEASON PRACTICE
Due to a new NCAA rule, Men’s Basketball will hold its first
preseason practice tomorrow and Women’s Basketball will do
the same on Monday. They are now allowed to have 30 days of
practice inside a 42-day period leading up to their first game.
The Men have an exhibition game at home against Bluffton on Nov.
1 and the first regular-season matchup is at home versus Coastal
Carolina on Nov. 8, which will be a doubleheader with the Women
facing Florida Atlantic that day as well. The Women open with a
home exhibition game on Nov. 2 versus Lake Erie. You can purchase
tickets by visiting ZipsTickets.com or calling our ticket office at
1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
Also, please be reminded that the season ticket renewal deadline
for Men's Basketball was Friday, Aug. 30. If you have not already
done so, please click here to renew online. Open seats will be
released to our waiting list and then to the general public very
soon.
THE INVITATIONAL
Spend some time on the links with the Zips on Oct. 1 for the Men's
and Women's Golf annual fundraiser The Invitational, presented by FirstEnergy
Solutions, at historic Firestone Country Club.
There is a limited field for this year's event. If you are
interested in playing, please contact men's golf graduate assistant
Lucas Murray at (330) 972-6290 or by e-mail, or women's
golf graduate assistant Breanna Patz at (330) 972-8021 or by e-mail.
"JIM DENNISON DAY" SET FOR NOV. 2
We are looking forward to honoring Jim Dennison, our winningest Football head coach
at the Nov. 2 home game against Kent State.
All former student-athletes, assistant coaches and staff
affiliated with Dennison's 28-year UA tenure are invited to attend
the festivities, which will include an on-field recognition. A
pre-game reception to celebrate Dennison will be held on the
FirstMerit Foundation Club Level (fifth floor) of the stadium. The
cost is $10 per person and includes a buffet lunch and a reserved
ticket to the game.
"Coach D" served as our head coach from 1973 to 1985, leading
Akron to the finals of the 1976 NCAA Division II playoffs. His 80
career wins are the most in program history.
VARSITY "A" ASSOCIATION MONOGRAM DAY AND CLAM
BAKE
Our Varsity "A" Association is planning a Monogram Day and Clam Bake in conjunction with
our Oct. 5 Football game versus Ohio (kickoff at 2 p.m.) and Men's
Soccer match against Hartwick (kickoff at 7 p.m.). The event will
be held at 5 p.m. inside the Stile Athletics Field House.
To RSVP, contact Alexa Doutt with our Z-Fund at (330) 972-2695 or
by e-mail.
'DRIVE FOR 5' DONOR OF THE WEEK
