FOOTBALL ON THE RISE!
I don’t know about you, but if I had to sum up Saturday's
game in two words, I would choose exhilarating and heartbreaking.
Every Zips fan – and it seemed like every sports fan in the
country – knows what our Football team did last Saturday versus Michigan
at the "Big House." I could not be more proud of the effort our
student-athletes and coaches put into what I'm sure will go down as
one of the more memorable games in the 113-year history of Zips
Football.
Coach Bowden talked a lot last week about what it means to be an
underdog, and it was clear that he and his staff had our players
physically, mentally and emotionally ready to compete. There is no
doubt that our program is in good hands and headed in the right
direction.
The team is at home on Saturday at 6 p.m. versus Louisiana. We
hope you will come out and show your support for what should be a
fun evening at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field. It will be
"Youth Night", with children ages 3 to 14 being served free ice
cream in a mini football helmet (while supplies last).
Saturday also will feature the second-annual "UA on Display," held before the game in Stile
Athletics Field House, which features interactive displays for
prospective high school students to better understand all that this
great University has to offer.
It’s also our annual "Band Day," with five local high school
marching bands performing with the University's marching band at
halftime.
Season and single-game tickets as well as mini-plans are on sale,
and can be purchased online anytime at ZipsTickets.com, or from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET on
Mondays through Fridays by either calling 1-888-99-AKRON (25766) or
visiting The C.P. and Cornelia S. Chima Athletics Ticket Office at
InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field.
"JIM DENNISON DAY" SET FOR NOV. 2
Earlier this week, we announced that the
University will honor Jim Dennison, its winningest Football head
coach at the Nov. 2 home game against Kent State.
All former student-athletes, assistant coaches and staff
affiliated with Dennison's 28-year UA tenure are invited to attend
the festivities, which will include an on-field recognition. A
pre-game reception to celebrate Dennison will be held on the
FirstMerit Foundation Club Level (fifth floor) of the stadium. The
cost is $10 per person and includes a buffet lunch and a reserved
ticket to the game.
"Coach D" served as our head coach from 1973 to 1985, leading
Akron to the finals of the 1976 NCAA Division II playoffs. His 80
career wins are the most in program history.
MEN'S SOCCER DATE CHANGE REMINDER
Another reminder to please note the date change for this
weekend's Men's Soccer match against Bowling Green. This
contest was originally scheduled for Friday night, but will be
played on Saturday at 1 p.m. – which makes it a great way to
start your day on campus and still leaves plenty of time for
tailgating before football kicks off at 6.
Tickets listing a different date or start time will be accepted on
Saturday.
Tickets for all home matches – including a limited number of
reserved season tickets, as well as a 5-game mini-plan – are
available by clicking here or calling our ticket office at
1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
Don’t forget, too, that Men’s Soccer hosts Ohio State
at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 24).
Finally, Women’s Soccer is home against Cleveland State at 2
p.m. this Sunday, when it’s Dollar Dog Day for the first 100
fans. The Women’s Basketball team also will be recognized and
will sign autographs at halftime, while the Women’s Soccer
team will sign postgame.
"BACK THE ZIPS"
Men's Basketball launched its #BackTheZips marketing campaign for the 2013-14 season
this week, themed to celebrate the program's consecutive MAC
championships as well as to show appreciation for current fans and
encourage new ones to support the team.
#BackTheZips will focus on an interactive, grassroots campaign
giving Zips fans access to student-athletes and coaches for a
series of photo shoots at major athletics and campus events over
the next three weeks. The photos will be used in the team's
advertising campaign and may appear on billboards and bus ads.
Student-athletes Demetrius Treadwell, Carmelo Betancourt and B.J.
Gladden are scheduled to appear this Saturday to take photos with
fans at ZipsFest prior to the Football game against Louisiana,
beginning around 4:30 p.m. and running until ZipsFest closes at
5:45 p.m., just prior to kickoff.
ZIPPY'S KIDS CLUB
As the fall sports season rolls on, don't forget to sign up your
children for Zippy’s Kids Club, presented by North Akron
Savings Bank and exclusive for Zips fans ages 12 and under. It
costs just $20 and there is a discounted rate of $16 for children
of UA faculty and staff.
A year-long membership includes not only a t-shirt, but also
admission to designated games in each sport. We have a lot of fun
activities built in to help raise the next generation of Zips
fans.
