FOOTBALL SEASON FINALE
Football, winners in two-straight games and three of its last four
to achieve its highest win total since 2008, closes out the season against Toledo on Friday at noon at
InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field. It also will be Senior
Day and the team will honor the 21 student-athletes in their
graduating class prior to kickoff.
I look forward to seeing you in the stands to cheer on the team
for the last time this year and to help send out our seniors in the
right way. This senior class has been through many ups and downs,
but are wrapping up their careers with a positive ending and can be
proud that they helped bring the Wagon Wheel back to our campus with the win over
Kent State earlier this month.
The game will be carried on ESPN3 and broadcast locally on SportsRadio1350.com (1350 AM) and nationally on iHeartRadio.
Tickets are available on ZipsTickets.com or by calling our ticket office at
1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
COACH BOWDEN CONTRACT EXTENSION
Last week we announced that Football Head Coach Terry Bowden signed a two-year contract extension. Pending approval
by the University's Board of Trustees, the new agreement resets his
contract to five more years, running through the 2018 season.
I know you are as appreciative as I am about what Coach Bowden has
done and recognize the positive energy and momentum surrounding our
football program that he has created. He has embraced our campus
and our community, and I know he is grateful for how each of you
have embraced him and our team. We’ve got the right leader
for Zips Football and I’m more excited than ever about our
future.
MEN'S SOCCER SEASON RECAP
Men's Soccer ended its season with a 1-0
overtime loss at Marquette in the second round of the NCAA
Tournament on Sunday. The match was played under challenging
conditions as the wind chill at kickoff was in the single digits
and the frozen turf played like an ice rink. However, as always,
our student-athletes and coaches competed until the bitter (pun
intended) end and finished out another proud year.
We ended the year with a 17-4-1 record, advanced to the NCAA
Tournament for the seventh-straight season, won our
ninth-consecutive Mid-American Conference regular-season title and
claimed the program's tenth MAC Tournament championship. While this
obviously wasn’t the first time we’ve had these
achievements, let’s not take for granted how hard our
student-athletes and coaches, especially first-year head coach
Jared Embick, worked to ensure we lived up to our high standards
yet again.
THANKSGIVING EVE HOOPS
After last competing on Nov. 16, Men's Basketball returns to the
court on Wednesday against nearby Malone for an exhibition game,
meaning the result will not count in either team's record. Tipoff
at James A. Rhodes Arena is set for 7 p.m. As is customary for
exhibition contests, Tommy Evans Lounge will not be open tomorrow
night. Tickets are available on ZipsTickets.com or by calling our ticket office at
1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
The game will be video streamed and broadcast locally on SportsRadio1350.com (1350 AM) and nationally on iHeartRadio.
After Wednesday, the team will have some additional down time
before a regular-season game at Cleveland State on Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.
We have a three-game homestand on Dec. 14, 16 and 18 against
Bethune-Cookman, Oral Roberts and Detroit, respectively.
Don't forget that the team will be in Honolulu, Hawaii, the week
of Christmas to compete in the Diamond Head Classic. Fan
travel packages are available and we would love to see you
there!
WOMEN'S HOOPS TRAVELS WEST ...
Just in time to escape our first real blast of winter weather,
Women's Basketball continues its season this weekend at a
tournament in San Luis Obispo, Calif. They leave town on Wednesday
and will take on event host Cal Poly on Friday at 10 p.m. ET and UC
Davis the next day at 8 p.m.
Both games will be broadcast locally on SportsRadio1350.com (1350 AM) and nationally on iHeartRadio.
The squad, which is off to a 3-2 start and averaging 89.6 points
per game, returns home to take on George Mason on Dec. 7. There will be a pre-game Youth Clinic – please
sign up any girls in kindergarten through eighth grade!
