WOMEN'S BASKETBALL IN THE BIG DANCE
After defeating Ball State 79-68 in Saturday's Mid-American
Conference Tournament championship, Women's Basketball is
preparing for its
first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the 40-year history of
the program. As the 13 seed, we will face fourth-seeded
Purdue on its home court in West Lafayette, Ind., at approximately
1:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, 30 minutes after the conclusion of the
Oklahoma State-Florida Gulf Coast game.
Our game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and broadcast
locally on SportsRadio1350.com (1350 AM) and nationally on
iHeartRadio. The pre-game radio broadcast is scheduled
to begin at 1 p.m. Be sure to follow our various social media
accounts and stay updated by checking our NCAA Tournament Central page.
Tickets for Saturday's game can be ordered through our ticket
office by calling 1-888-99-AKRON (25766) through 10 a.m. today.
Tickets for Saturday's game cost $18. If we win, those who purchase
for Saturday will be automatically charged $14 per ticket for
Monday's game, as the NCAA automatically charges us for our ticket
allotment.
Additionally, our Z-Fund has planned a fan bus trip that includes
a game ticket and transportation for $50. The bus will leave campus
at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday and return to Akron immediately following
the game. Should our team advance to Monday's second round, another
fan bus will be provided.
For those of you who purchased tickets through us and will be
traveling to West Lafayette on your own, representatives from our
ticket office will be in the lobby of the team hotel, the Four
Points by Sheraton (1600 Cumberland Ave, 47906), Friday night and
Saturday morning. UA ticket reps will also staff our team will call
window at Mackey Arena starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Please
bring photo identification to claim your tickets.
We look forward to seeing many of you in West Lafayette this
weekend as our Women make history! If you can't make the trip,
remember that Johnny J’s in the Valley is hosting a Zips Watch
Party.
BARBER CROWNED INDOOR POLE VAULT CHAMPION
Sophomore pole vaulter Shawn Barber became the University's first male individual national
champion at last weekend's NCAA Indoor Track & Field
Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. He had a winning clearance of
18-10.25, and was one of five Zips to earn First Team All-America
status.
Joining Barber on the first team was Brittany Funk (finished
eighth in weight throw), Alex McCune (sixth in heptathlon) and
Annika Rolof (third in pole vault). Weronika Gaudyn was a Second
Team All-American (ninth in triple jump). Alex also made history
with an American record jump of 17-10.50 in the pole vault during
the heptathlon.
Please join us in congratulating Head Coach Dennis Mitchell and
his staff on a great indoor season!
MEN'S BASKETBALL ACCEPTS BID TO COLLEGEINSIDER.COM
TOURNAMENT
Men's Basketball is hard at work preparing for a
CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament game against Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne
(IPFW) in Fort Wayne, Ind., tonight at 7. Head Coach Keith
Dambrot has his team, which boasts a 21-12 record, competing in the
postseason for the seventh-straight year and eighth time in his 10
years at UA.
This tournament includes 32 teams from non-BCS programs not
participating in the NCAA Tournament or National Invitation
Tournament. It is single elimination and consists of five rounds.
All games are played at campus sites, so we could potentially host
a home game this weekend or next week as we advance.
Those of you wishing to attend the contest at IPFW, just a
three-hour drive from campus, can purchase tickets at GoMastodons.com, by visiting the Gates
Athletic Center Ticket Office or calling (260) 481-6555. Ticket
prices start at $10.
If you're unable to make it to Fort Wayne, you can listen locally
on SportsRadio1350.com (1350 AM) and nationally on iHeartRadio or watch a free video stream.
While we hopefully have plenty more basketball action ahead of
us this season, our ticket office is preparing for 2014-15 as well.
After selling a record number of season tickets this year, those
interested in being a new season ticketholder next season can place
a $50 deposit by calling 1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
Renewal information for current season ticketholders will be
announced at a later date.
