WEAR PURPLE 4 PETE'S SAKE
To show our support for Men's Basketball Director of Operations
Dan Peters during his battle with pancreatic cancer and to raise
awareness for this disease, we
are hosting a "Purple Out" for tonight's game against Ball State at
James A. Rhodes Arena at 7 p.m.
We encourage everyone in attendance to wear purple, the color
associated with the fight against this form of cancer, and the
first 3,000 fans to come through the turnstiles will receive purple
t-shirts with the "4 Pete's Sake" logo printed on the front. Both
our Men's and Women's teams are wearing a patch displaying that
logo on their uniforms this season.
The coaching staff at each Mid-American Conference school as well
as many others around the country – including University of
Arizona where Dan's son, Danny, is a member of the staff –
have worn logo pins on their suit jacket lapels during games last
weekend and this week in conjunction with the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness
Week.
Dan is in his second stint with the Zips and has been around
collegiate basketball in Ohio for 30-plus years, including being
head coach at Youngstown State and an assistant coach at Cincinnati
and Ohio State. You can read the outpouring of support for him by
searching for – and add your own well-wishes by using –
the hashtag #4PetesSake on Twitter.
Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports wrote an inspiring column late last week about
Dan (other links of additional stories listed below).
We look forward to seeing you at JAR tonight as the team looks to
improve a two-game win streak and build upon our 5-1 league record,
tops in the MAC East and tied for first overall.
OTHER HOOPS ACTION THIS WEEK
Men's Basketball makes the short drive to Kent State on Saturday.
The latest installment in the PNC Wagon Wheel
Challenge against the Flashes, which we currently lead 3.5-2.0,
tips off at 6 p.m., and will be televised by Time Warner
Cable Sports Channel and ESPN3. As
always, we are expecting a large contingent of Zips fans in the
crowd at M.A.C. Center.
Women's Basketball, which rides a three-game win streak including
a victory at home over Kent State earlier this month, is on the
road at Toledo on Thursday at 7 p.m., and back home to face Buffalo
on Sunday at 2 p.m.
All basketball home games are video streamed, and home and away games are
broadcast locally on SportsRadio1350.com (1350 AM) and nationally on iHeartRadio.
Tickets are available on ZipsTickets.com or by calling our ticket office at
1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
TECCA HAS RECORD SETTING PERFORMANCE
Women's Basketball senior Rachel Tecca was named the MAC's East Division Player of the Week on
Monday, after having one of the best performances in program
history during the team's 101-79 win at Eastern Michigan on Sunday.
In that game, she set the program's single-game scoring record
with 43 points and also had a career-best 22 rebounds. That broke
our record of 38 points set by Sue Davis in 1976 and was the
highest point total by a MAC player since 2012. She earned NCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
honors as well!
Even more impressive, that performance made her the first
2,000-point scorer in team history and the fifth active player in
Division I to reach that milestone.
Please join us in congratulating Rachel on these wonderful
accomplishments!
WEEKEND HOMESTAND FOR TENNIS
Tennis will hold the first three home matches of its "spring"
season this weekend at LaTuchie Tennis Center in nearby Stow (driving
directions). On Friday at 1 p.m., we take on Illinois-Chicago
and on Sunday face ASA Community College, from Brooklyn, N.Y., and
Oakland at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
Head Coach Brandon Padgett has his young team, which includes four
freshmen and just two upperclass players, off to a 5-0 start. They won at Cleveland State 6-1 over the weekend.
