"4 PETE'S SAKE"
Our thoughts are with Director of Men's Basketball Operations Dan
Peters and his family as he has taken an indefinite leave of absence from the program to
begin treatment for pancreatic cancer.
To show its support for "Pete," the team has dedicated the season
to him and will wear a patch on their jerseys consisting of a
purple ribbon and the phrase "4 Pete's Sake."
Dan is in his second stint with the Zips and has been around
collegiate basketball in Ohio for 30-plus years, including being
head coach at Youngstown State and an assistant coach at Cincinnati
and Ohio State. You can read the outpouring of support for him by
searching for – and add your own well-wishes by using –
the hashtag #4PetesSake on Twitter.
"BACK THE ZIPS" THREE-GAME WIN STREAK
Men's Basketball looks to extend a three-game win streak by
closing out a three-game homestand at James A. Rhodes Arena
tomorrow at 7 p.m. versus Detroit. It will be the team's third game
in five days as it comes off a 74-64 victory over Oral Roberts last night. We had
good crowds for these recent games, even with some wintry weather
on those nights, and I know Coach Dambrot and the team appreciate
all that you do to "Back the Zips" and create a home-court
advantage.
The program will be in Honolulu, Hawaii, the week of Christmas to
compete in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. Our first game
in the event is on Dec. 22 against Oregon State at 7:30 p.m. ET. If
you are unable to follow us to the tropics, you can watch on ESPNU
or join other Zips fans for a Watch Party at Johnny J's Pub and Grille in the Valley (1282
Weathervane Lane, 44313). We’ll play two additional games in
Hawaii on Dec. 23 and Dec. 25 (game times TBD based on our
results), and then the team travels directly to South Carolina to
take on the Gamecocks at 4 p.m. on Dec. 28 in a game televised on
ESPNU.
The team is back home on New Year's Eve at 6 p.m., to face Coppin
State. The game is one of the many official activities as part of
First
Night Akron in downtown Akron – if you have a First Night
button, you can purchase a general admission ticket for just $5 or
bring a child (age 14 or under) for free.
Tickets are available on ZipsTickets.com or by calling our ticket office at
1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
All games are video streamed and broadcast locally on SportsRadio1350.com (1350 AM) and nationally on iHeartRadio.
BASKETBALL HOLIDAY MINI PLAN
As you quickly run out of days to complete your holiday shopping,
don't forget about our Men's Basketball Holiday Mini Plan, which makes the
perfect gift for the special Zips Basketball fans in your life. For
$35 you can select a ticket to either the Ohio (Feb. 22) or Kent
State (March 7 or 8) game along with a ticket to two additional
games of your choice. You’ll also receive a Zips replica
basketball jersey while supplies last.
Tickets are available on ZipsTickets.com or by calling our ticket office at
1-888-99-AKRON (25766). Season and single-game tickets as well as
additional mini plans also are available. Please remember that our
Ticket Office will be closed from 5 p.m. on Dec. 20 until 9 a.m. on
Jan. 2, but online and walk-up gameday sales (starting two hours
prior to tipoff) will be available.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ZIPS TRIP
Our Z-Fund is planning a fan bus trip to the Men's Basketball game
at Ohio on Sunday, Jan. 12. Tip off at OU's Convocation Center is
scheduled for 6 p.m., and the bus will leave campus at 12:30 p.m.
and return immediately following the game.
You can reserve your spot by paying $35, which includes travel and
a game ticket. The bus will stop for dinner prior to the game at
Broney's Alumni Bar and Grill. Your meal at the restaurant and food
at the game is not included.
For the same price, we also are coordinating a trip to the Women's
Basketball game at Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 26. That
contest starts at 2 p.m., and the bus will leave campus at 10:45
a.m., and return immediately following the game. On the return
trip, we will stop at the Hollywood Casino in Toledo.
RSVP to Micklos Blake with the Z-Fund at (330) 972-7142 or by e-mail.

IMPACT 2020
In case you missed it, last week we unveiled a
comprehensive seven-year strategic plan titled IMPACT 2020.
Nine months in the making, the plan features our new mission
statement: To have a positive and meaningful IMPACT on the
people and communities we serve. It also mirrors the
university-wide strategic plan Vision
2020. Each of Vision 2020's five "Pathways to Success" is
paired with the five IMPACT 2020 Goals:
• Improve Our Academics and Enhance Our Culture
• Win Championships
• Develop Our Facilities and Resources
• Grow Our Funding
• Strengthen Our Identity and Position
Dozens of student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans have
filmed video testimonials in which they individually describe
the impact of Zips Athletics on their lives and vice versa.
You can submit your testimonial in any of the following ways:
• A short video e-mailed to AkronAthletics@gmail.com as a .mov attachment
• A written testimonial in the body of an e-mail sent to AkronAthletics@gmail.com
• A post on the feedback form on the IMPACT 2020
feedback web page
• A post on Twitter or Facebook using the hashtag #ZipsIMPACT
We have heard from many of you and look forward to continued
feedback as we shape the future of Zips Athletics.
