WEEK OF WELCOME
This is the University's "Week of Welcome" and campus is buzzing with
activity as students are moving in and preparing for classes to
begin on Monday. "New Roo Weekend", an orientation series for freshman,
starts tomorrow.
Tomorrow night, over 3,000 freshmen will join student-athletes and
coaches from all of our teams at InfoCision Stadium to learn the
fight song and participate in other activities with the Marching
Band. They also will watch football practice and hear from Coach
Bowden.
KICKOFF LUNCHEON SELL OUT
We were happy to announce earlier today that our second-annual Football Kickoff Luncheon had sold
out. This year's event will be held downtown at Quaker
Station.
Coach Bowden and others will address the crowd to preview the 2013
season, while our band, spirit team and Zippy will be there as well
to create a festive atmosphere.
One week from tonight our Football season kicks off in Orlando
when we take on UCF. The game, which starts at 7 p.m., is scheduled
to air on ESPN3.
COACHING 101
Several of our head coaches will be guest lecturers in the University's
coaching course during the new academic year. Jim Tressel, our
Vice President for Student Success, and former UA and Walsh
University football coach Jim Dennison will team-teach the class on
successful coaching and leadership.
Tressel's first coaching job was as a member of Dennison's staff
at UA in 1974.
BASKETBALL SEASON TICKET RENEWAL REMINDER
I know that Football season is just starting, but want to remind
you that the season ticket renewal deadline for Men's Basketball is
Friday, Aug. 30. If you have not already done so, please click here to renew online or call our ticket office
at 1-888-99-AKRON (25766) Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m.
We will be announcing the 2013-14 schedule soon.
FIRST REGULAR-SEASON EVENT OF THE SCHOOL YEAR
Our first sport to get its regular season underway is Women's
Soccer, which will
compete in the Boilermaker Cup at Purdue on Friday and Sunday,
facing Purdue and North Dakota, respectively.
The team returns nine of eleven starters from last season, and I
know Coach Croft, his staff and players are excited about the
season.
SOMETHING UNIQUE ON THE DIAMOND
Former Zips Baseball players Chris Bassitt and Andrew Brown were
starting pitchers on two separate minor league teams earlier this
month and each earned a win on the same day.
Chris plays for the Birmingham Barons (Chicago
White Sox) and Andrew for the Asheville Tourists (Colorado
Rockies).
Congrats to both!
NEW HOME FOR ZIPS LIVE
Zips
Live presented by Lee Hyder and Associates will debut for
2013-14 on Monday at 7 p.m. from its new home at Johnny J's Pub and
Grille in the Valley.
Throughout the season, the program will air on Thursday from 7-8
p.m. at Johnny J's, but the first show will be held on Monday
because of Football's game at UCF on Thursday.
The show re-plays weekly two hours prior to kickoff of that week's
football game.
